Garbage Disposal Service FAQ

Garbage Disposal Service — common questions

My disposal hums but doesn't turn — what now?+

It's jammed. Switch it off, free the flywheel with the hex wrench in the bottom of the unit, clear whatever is caught, then press the red reset button. If it still only hums, the motor is finished.

How long does a disposal last?+

A 3/4 or 1 HP unit commonly runs 10-15 years. Budget 1/3 HP models are often replaced in 5-7. Motor size and the quality of the grind components are what separate them.

What shouldn't go down a disposal?+

Grease, coffee grounds, bones, and fibrous waste like celery, corn husks, and onion skins. Also large volumes of starchy scraps — potato peels and pasta turn to paste in the trap.

Leaking disposal — fixable?+

It depends where. A leak at the top is usually the sink flange seal and is worth resealing. A leak from the bottom of the housing means an internal seal has failed, and those units are replaced rather than rebuilt.

Are disposals a good idea on septic?+

They add solids load to the tank, so septic homes need a model designed for it and a realistic pumping schedule. Some homeowners on septic skip the disposal entirely for that reason.

Do I need an electrician too?+

Not for a like-for-like swap into an existing plugged outlet. A new circuit, a hardwired conversion, or a switch relocation is electrical work and belongs to a licensed electrician.
